We had a chat with Jon Pointing ahead of his show here

Hi! Nice to meet you, what’s your name?
Jon Pointing

Where are you from?
Grew up in Epsom mainly, now live in London.

What brings you here?
I’m doing my show at the Soho Theatre.

Sorry, didn’t get you a drink, what would you like?
Are we in the Soho Theatre bar? Obviously I’m just in my living room on my laptop answering these questions so it doesn’t matter. I normally have a beer there but I guess I could have whatever imaginary drink I like. There’s normally a bucket under one of the urinals in the toilets. I’ll have that please.

Some crisps or nuts?
Yes, could I get six thousand packets of dry roasted nuts and half a pack of crisps please.

So, what’s so special about your show?
It’s not really for me to say. It’s special to me because I’ve worked hard on it and I really enjoy performing it. It’s not just a piss take of theatre, we made the show like a theatre show so I think it feels like that and not just a comedy. The character is based on lot’s of men I’ve come into contact with throughout my life not just cringeworthy thespians. Everyone knows someone like him. Men who put themselves in positions of power and abuse that position. I think it’s thorough

How did the idea of the show come about?
I wanted to make a character that I could perform on the circuit with a view to make a full hour show out of that character. I didn’t want to do multiple characters and I wanted the character to be able to interact with the audience or at least acknowledge the situation of them being there. The idea for Cayden Hunter came from lot’s of things, my own experiences at university, my experience with theatre workshops. Also at the time there were lot’s of adverts online for the Kevin Spacey masterclass. I’d watched videos of him before, there’s one in particular where in an interview he talks about taking his acting workshop to women in the middle east that really makes my skin crawl. I don’t just say this in hindsight but when I watched those Kevin Spacey videos I recognised his behaviour and his demeanour in lot’s of men I’ve come across and not exclusively in the acting game. It seemed fair to take aim at these kind of men. So I went on from there.

Do you come here often?
Quite a lot.

You can catch Jon Pointing in Act Natural from 20-25 November
